4th Rochford Cubs get a VIP Visitor!!! Friday 6th October 2017
The Cubs Alpha Pack were treated to a very interesting evening with a very special guest at their pack meeting recently! Local Rochford Lady, Ann Long (now Ann Pearce) was a GB Diver at the 1952, 1956 & 1960 Olympic Games at Helsinki, Melbourne & Rome!!! She also represented Great Britain twice in the British Empire & Commonwealth Games where she won Gold both times!!! She asked the children if they enjoyed Sport or had an ambition and told them, “Do something for yourself to be proud of”. The Cubs asked her some very intelligent questions. One Cub asked whether she had ever suffered any injuries. She said that whist diving from the 5 metre board at Leyton swimming pool, she got her finger stuck in the pool drain and still can’t move that finger to this day!!! Also, on another occasion she broke 2 teeth when hitting the bottom of the swimming pool !!! They loved seeing all of Ann's Medals, Photos, Scrapbooks & Memorabilia from her time as a Champion over 60 years ago!!! Now 81, Ann was still able to recall her exciting life as a teenager into her 20s and kept the kids enthralled with her stories of the past! The children were very amused when she told them about the time that she entered a high board competition at an outdoor pool at Wood Green. She did a back dive from the 10 metre board, it was really windy and threw her off course, so that she landed flat in the water and split her costume for everyone to see!!! She engaged so well with all of the children and they had great fun posing with her for silly photos at the end of the evening!
